West Wales Tropics Basketball Club were originally founded as regional teams of the West Wales Basketball Association in 2007. Originally players from each member club were nominated by their coaches to represent the region. In 2007 / 2008 the 1st regional team competed in the South Wales Valleys Basketball u.18's league and won the league.

The following season on the back of the u.18's success regional teams were entered into the SWVBL at senior and u.16's levels. The teams adopted the name of the 'West Wales Tropics' and selection became open, effectively creating a super club within the region.
