Tropics - class of 2012

On the 21st February 2012, I managed to get to see my first Tropics game of the season. I had infact not seen them playing since the middle of the last season. The roster had changed very little, but the team had changed immeasurably.

In 2007 I came up with the concept of a super team for West Wales to enable players to play at a better level and for the game to develop throughout the region. We were extremely fortunate in the first couple of seasons to have some extremely accomplished players and did exceptionally well winning titles at both Junior and senior levels.

Despite that previous success the team that I saw beat Swansea Deuce by 78 - 46 on the 21st February were in my opinion the most complete team that I have ever seen playing for the Tropics. There were 10 players and everyone had a contribution to make. Virtually any combination that took to the floor were equally accomplished. The whole team played as a team and every man played for the team and not as individuals. It was quite simply awesome to watch and I was extremely proud of the development that this set of players have made this year.

When I first came up with the idea for what eventually became the West Wales Tropics, this was what I had in mind. Guys living and working in the area who were able to compete consistently on the South Wales Basketball stage.

Erki, Taavi, David, Andy, Scott, Dan, Dave, Maelien, Andrew and Mark - you should be very proud of what you have achieved. Keep up the good work.

A special mention to Mark Rogers, who stepped in mid season as player coach and at the tender age of 21 has an immense amount of respect and authority, as well as being a very good player. Also to Maelien and Andrew who I have seen come all the way through the Preseli juniors and both totally deserved their place in the senior team.
